Over 10,000,000 tons of plastics are produced globally each year, and over a third go to landfills, where they decompose all too slowly while releasing toxins into the environment. Plastic process byproducts such as mercury (www.ewg.org/issues/mercury/20040319/index.php), and often the plastics themselves, such as Teflon™ (www.healthfinder.gov/news/newsstory.asp?docID=529691) have very negative effects on animal and plant life in the environment—and ultimately affect our lives and our children’s lives.
